Fraser Institute Secondary School Report for BC

Fraser Institute School Rankings!

http://britishcolumbia.compareschoolrankings.org/ChooseReport.aspx

The Fraser Report is helpful when looking at schools in the Greater Vancouver Area in particular but uses a narrow approach not providing a full picture of the merits of each school.  Additionally special school attributes are not considered.  When relocating it is important to keep an open mind about the best fit for each child.

Fraser Institute Elementary Schools Report for BC

For a good snapshot of BC Elementary School Academic Performance find the link below to the annual Fraser Institute Report.

http://www.fraserinstitute.org/uploadedFiles/fraser-ca/Content/research-news/research/publications/SchoolReportCard-BCElementary-2012.pdf

This report relies on standardized government testing in Grades 4 & 7 across British Columbia.  The Fraser Report is very helpful when looking at schools in the Greater Vancouver Area in particular but uses a narrow approach not providing a full picture of the merits of each school.  Additionally special school attributes are not considered.  When relocating it is important to keep an open mind about the best fit for each child.  I know my own children have surprised me tremendously during our relocation!

LIGHTS OUT! Canadian Painting from the 1960’s
Posted by Feb 13, 2012

Vancouver Art Gallery

February 18 – April 29 2012

Greg Curnoe

The 1960s was a decade of enormous political and cultural tumult throughout the world. This was certainly true of Canada and Canadian art. As the country celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1967, modernist painting was strong in all regions of the country, but debates between the merits of figuration and abstraction were abundant. The important centres of activity, such as Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, London, Regina and Vancouver, each contributed to the national dialogue in a distinct fashion.

The Vancouver Art Gallery holds a rich collection of paintings from the 1960s, as exemplified by the works of artists such as Suzanne Bergeron, Ronald Bloore, Yves Gaucher, Kenneth Lochhead, Michael Morris, Michael Snow (whose important 1963 canvas has provided the title for this exhibition), Harold Town and Joyce Wieland. Canadian painting during the sixties was diverse and ranged from the colourfield works of Jack Bush and bold optical images of Claude Tousignant, to the haunting figurative works of Jack Chambers and Jean-Paul Lemieux, to name only a few. Lights Out! Canadian Painting from the 1960s reflects the diversity and strength of this exceptional era.

50th Vancouver International Boat Show February 8 – 12, 2012
Posted by Feb 11, 2012

Boats are big in Vancouver, which is no surprise in a city surrounded by water.

And even if you aren’t personally a boat owner (Don’t we all wish we were?), you can still enjoy loads of boat-related fun—including free boat rides—at the Vancouver International Boat ShowFebruary 8 – 12, 2012.

This year is the 50th anniversary for the Vancouver International Boat Show and the exhibitions, programs and guests for the 2012 Show cover two venues: BC Place in downtown Vancouver and Granville Island. The In-Water venue at Granville Island’s Marina includes boat displays and free 30-minute sail boat rides courtesy of Discover Boating.

Vancouver Boat Show

Most of the Boat Show action will be at BC Place, where, along with a huge array of boat-related exhibitions, you can see daily performances by “Duma, the Famous Waterskiing and Boat-Driving Dog,” meet crew member Russell Newberry from the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch, attend expert seminars for both experienced and novice boat owners, and learn about the latest marine products and accessories at the Manufacturers Showcase. There’s also a Kids Zone and Sailfest, too.

Tickets for the Vancouver International Boat Show 2012 are $15 per person and free for kids 16 and under. Save $3 on admission when you buy tickets online.

Do You Want What I Have Got – A Craigslist Cantata!

A Vancouver Original Held Over from the Push Festival – Rave Revues

Your personal ads, set to music! Irregular hats for cats, mounted lobsters, autographed copies of the Bible: this new work from composer Veda Hille and the CBC’s Bill Richardson explores what humanity has to offer and turns it into comic musical fare. Who wouldn’t want a broken time machine, for free? Come and take a look at the vagaries and intimacies of the internet. Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craigslist Cantata features the songs “300 Stuffed Penguins,” “Chilli Eating Buddy,” “Decapitated Dolls,” and more.

With more than 700 local sites in 70 countries, and over 20 billion page-views and 50 million new ads posted monthly, Craigslist has become a treasured online locus where we are sanctioned to share our needs, wants, and offerings. Hille describes it as “the mass of humanity pressed against the glass,” offering a forum that is simultaneously anonymous and incredibly public.

Do You Want What I Have Got?, an 80 minute song cycle of quick-witted and heartfelt spoken text and song, is the brainchild of two of Vancouver’s most beloved cultural icons. An award-winning writer and broadcaster, Richardson has contributed to CBC Radio since 1984 and currently hosts “Saturday Afternoon at the Opera” and “In Concert.” Composer Hille is one of Canada’s foremost indie singer-songwriters and has been described as “visceral, luminescent, fierce, haunting, and with talent to burn” (The Coast, Halifax).
